Top Destination San Diego

San Diego, the eighth largest city in the United States, is often referred to as "America's Finest City" and for good reason! Known for its beautiful weather, pristine beaches, friendly people and a plethora of entertainment, San Diego is a favorite travel destination for visitors across the globe.

San Diego is famous for its mild weather, and features 70 miles of coastline. Its beaches are great in all four seasons. The winter weather is not typically conducive to swimming, but there are many sunny winter days, which are great for a long walk on the sandy beach.

San Diego in southern California is truly a city with something for everyone. With such beautiful weather and miles of pristine coastline, it's no surprise San Diego is a top destination for visitors.

San Diego's Pride - Balboa Park

Twelve-hundred-acre Balboa Park, located just northeast of downtown, is San Diego's pride. Established in 1868 and largely developed for two expositionsthe 1915-16 Panama-California and the 1935-36 California Pacific International - it remains a thriving component of the city, with museums, gardens, unique shopping, and the San Diego Zoo at its heart.

The California Tower and the dome of the California Building in Balboa Park are both decorated in inlaid blue, green, gold, black, and white ceramic tiles. The tower is part of the San Diego Museum of Man. The design of the facade of the California Building is taken from that of the Cathedral of Mexico in Mexico City. The California Tower rises 200 feet. At its top is a weather vane in the shape of a Spanish ship similar to Cabrillo's. Inside the tower, a 100-bell symphonic carillon plays the standard Westminster chimes every quarter hour and a five minute recital at noon. The bells are operated from two keyboards on the third floor of the California Building. Usually they are played automatically with reels similar to those of a player piano. Occasionally, however, a carillonneur presents a live recital.

A free red trolley tram circuits the park every ten minutes.

Architectural Diversity Houston, TX

The City of Houston, Texas is not defined by one solitary style of architecture. It is a diverse and complicated aesthetic medley of intertwining styles and building techniques that represent the city's diverse culture.

Houston has the third largest skyline in the United States allowing for massive skyscrapers to blend in with mid-sized office building stepping down to modest homes. As one drives along one of the many freeways which crisscross the landscape, the diverse architectural styles blend into each other. The styles from Classical Revival, Colonial Revival, Victorian, Craftsman, Art Deco, Modern, and Post-Modern define the diverse cultural background of the city.

The style-savvy residents of the country's fourth-largest city and third-largest county (Harris) know that there is no place quite like Houston.

Bridges in Waco, TX

Here: Waco Suspension Bridge and Washington Avenue Bridge (The Waco Steel Bridge)

There is a nice little town between Austin and Dallas - it is the city of Waco in the heartland of Texas. If in Waco visit the Waco Suspension bridge. It might be the most beautiful bridge in Texas with, perhaps, the exception of its elder sister, the Pennybacker Bridge in Austin.

Anyway, walk onto the Waco Suspension bridge and go halfway across so that you can sit on the cables where they dip to their lowest point just a few feet from the ground. Watch the water, watch the mud ducks spalsh, watch the traffic on I-35 and then think back to 1870 when the bridge was opened. Cattle, horses, wagons and carriages, and of course people used this bridge to cross the Brazos River between east and west Waco. Animals and people both had to pay a toll.

Today, it is free. It is at its most beautiful at sunset when the stucco is bathed in a golden glow. Also, look underneath the bridge and you can see the original bricks. When it was built, it had old-timey crenellated brick turrets at the apexes. Now it's all smooth.

Stairway To Heaven In Houston

Houston,TX is a haven for many genuine contemporary architecture treasures. It is a place where a modern lifestyle is definitely celebrated. Architecturally progressive and contemporary structures in and around Houston exemplify modern living.

In the 1960's and 70's, Houston's architecture significantly shifted to reflect the city's booming economy. From the Astrodome to the Museum of Fine Arts to the Rothko Chapel to the terrific modern homes throughout the city, Houston became modern in every way and continues to be architecturally progressive today. Because Houston is one of the top cities for fabrication, architects have direct access to metal, steel, and glass fabricators on a local level, and as a result, have designed and constructed some amazingly creative and innovate works.

Houston's Skyline District holds the Bayou City's finest examples of modern architecture and design. It invites people to see some of the most exciting examples of Modern architecture and design in the nation.

Gulf Building Houston Texas

left:       BG Group Place - Formerly MainPlace, Block 93
middle: 712 Main - Formerly: JPMorgan Chase Bank Building - Formerly: Gulf Building
right:     JPMorgan Chase Tower

Historic buildings are a great way to explore the past of any city, and Houston, Texas is no exception.

Nestled beautifully in the heart of downtown Houston, 712 Main (formerly: JPMorgan Chase Bank Building - formerly: Gulf Building) was constructed in 1929. The property is 36 stories and was the tallest skyscraper in Houston until 1963. Although now dwarfed by much higher neighboring skyscrapers 712 Main is truly a local treasure.

The iconic 37-story Art Deco skyscraper is rich in history and a defining landmark of downtown Houston. It is an explosion of art deco, half way between a wedding cake and a medieval castle. The skyscraper is Gothic in design on the outside and inside. When the building opened it boasted Houston's most elaborate Art Deco interiors. The detailing in the Main Street lobby and original National Bank of Commerce banking hall are still intact.
Texas Commerce Bank initiated the restoration of the building in 1989, in what is still considered one of the largest privately funded preservation projects in American history.

The art-deco skyscraper is very unique. The Gulf Building marked the high point of the Roaring '20s construction boom that was transforming Houston from a Southern town to a major metropolis.

Angel St Louis Cemetery No 3 New Orleans

There is something romantic and intriguing about St. Louis Cemetery No. 3 near the beautiful City Park and NOMA sculpture garden in New Orleans, LA. This graveyard is an outdoor museum of art and history, filled with sacred treasures ensconced in stone, marble and iron.

In N'awlins cemeteries are called "Cities of the Dead", but the past is always a part of the present here. Saint Louis Cemetery #3 is utterly enchanting as a destination for the living to visit. It's the living things here that matter: the people who tend the grave sites, the flowers they leave behind, and the wonderful combinations of light and shadow, heat and cool, wind and calm, that make this one of NOLA's most intimate and expressive venues.

The Big Easy's St. Louis No. 3 cemetery has an interesting mix of personal tombs and "society" vaults. The tombs are shoved together so tightly that they create a mystical maze for tourists and mourners in which they can lose themselves. The plaque near the Esplanade Avenue entrance says: "Here the living find comfort and are consoled by visiting the burial places of their loved ones and praying for them."
We are all equal in death.
