An Incredible 19th Century Lens Has Been Reengineered For DSLR

In 1840, Joseph Petzval invented an optical portrait lens, which for the rest of the century would be used to take loads of photos. Now, the retro-fanatics at Lomography have reengineered the lens from the ground up for today's Canon and Nikon cameras. And the photos are incredible.

What we're looking at is a complete reinvention of the Petzval lens to fit either Canon EF mount or Nikon F mount cameras—they'll work on both film SLR and DSLR cameras.

Lytro Light Field Camera: This Is What New Feels Like

It isn't very often we encounter technology that is really, truly new. PCs, cellphones, the Internet, multitouch. Those all changed our world when they were first introduced. Not to overstate it, but Lytro may well be the latest member of that clique. The selling point is simple: you no longer have to worry about getting a shot in focus, because any part of the photo can be brought into focus after the fact. Magic.

Its guts are built on light field capture; concepts completely removed from what we previously understood about cameras. It's clearly not evolutionary. But for all the newness and innovation it brings to consumers, does it have what it takes to be revolutionary?

Computational photography: the snap is only the start

Pelican makes a phone camera that allows two subjects to be in focus but not objects in between them

Imagine a camera that allows you to see through a crowd to get a clear view of someone who would otherwise be obscured, a smartphone that matches big-budget lenses for image quality, or a photograph that lets you change your point of view after it's taken.

The ideas may sound outlandish but they could become commonplace if "computational photography" lives up to its promise.

Unlike normal digital photography - which uses a sensor to capture a single two-dimensional image of a scene - the technique records a richer set of data to construct its pictures.

Instead of trying to mimic the way a human eye works, it opens the activity up to new software-enhanced possibilities.

Pelican Imaging is one of the firms leading the way.

Why Backing Up Your Files May Be Your Most Important Photography Habit

Humans are damn near helpless and hopeless without habits. Specific tasks, actions and responsibilities must be completed every day, and at the same time and in the same place, to lead any kind of meaningful life. As the old saying goes: Some people are so habitual that you could set your watch by their actions. Growing as a photographer, whether hobbyist, amateur or professional, and enjoying the process, is essentially impossible without a long series of photography habits: cleaning your equipment, checking your memory cards and batteries, holding your camera “correctly,” using the same exposure formula for specific shooting conditions, etc.

Many photographers, however, have still not made backing up their computer files (of all kinds) the important habit it should be. I think part of the reason is that we are all still a bit starry-eyed about computers. We create a file, give it name and save it; and it happens so quickly that it makes it easy to move to the next task and accomplish more during less time, which, after all, is one of the primary benefits of a computer. It’s time to wipe the stars from our eyes and return to Earth, however, and realize that computers are devices conceived and built by humans, which means they can fail…and they do!
Backing up files is the only means currently available to protect us from the imperfections of computers, hard drives and all other storage devices. That’s why The American Society of Media Photographers recommends the following 3-step backup plan:
