Photography through a smarter lens

At Europe's biggest technology show, Sony is stripping photography back to a lens and a smartphone.

Matt Warman reports.

Digital photography has revolutionised how we all take pictures – rolls of film and bulky lenses have, for many, been replaced by the simple camera built into a smartphone, while enthusiasts have upgraded to increasingly advanced models that would have been impossible in an analogue age. The idea of editing, cropping and improving a picture the second it’s been taken is commonplace, and sometimes automatic.

But some things have become worse, too: while we take billions of pictures, many languish impossible to find on memory cards or online, the lack of an index rendering them useless and the far greater quantity more a burden than a benefit. And while more photographs are printed out – thanks to innovative services such as Stickygram you can even customise your own iPad case – the quality of those pictures is often hampered by poor lenses and small sensors. Cramming a proper camera into a tiny spare space in a smartphone is not easy.

Companies such as Nokia have long emphasised that their phones come with excellent cameras, but the public has not seen that as sufficient reason to buy them in enormous numbers. This year at the Europe’s enormous technology jamboree in Berlin, Sony, however, took a different approach.

The ‘Smart Lens’ seeks to use the smartphone as a complement to serious photography, by using its processing power and adding only a much better – and totally independent – lens and sensor. Photographs taken at a much higher resolution are stored on the lens’s own memory card, but all the editing can take place on the smartphone. And while the lens can be mounted on the phone itself, it can also work on a range of up to 10m. So in a crowd it’s easy to hold the lens up above your head and use the screen held in your other hand to see what’s going on.

Called the QX10 and QX100, and retailing at £149 and £399 respectively, Sony’s lenses are not cheap. But the QX100, for instance, gives you everything currently available in the £550 Sony camera on which it is based.

iPhone Photography Awards 2013

You Will Not Believe These Amazing Photos Were Taken With A Smart Phone

The results are in, folks. The winners of the 2013 iPhone Photography Awards were announced earlier today, capturing an insanely impressive collection of snapshots taken with a smart phone device. No, this is not your average photography contest. Prepare for your mind to be blown.

The victorious photographers -- whose works range from images of towering architecture to haunting portraits of animals -- are now being shown on the IPPA website, showing just how intricate and focused an iPhone composition can be. With their perfectly balanced light and thoughtfully framed subjects, these photos hardly look like they were taken with the tiny lens affixed to the back of a mobile phone.

But, rest assured, all the photos submitted to the IPPA are in fact the results of a well-timed phone photo. Apps like Instagram and Hisptamatic were fair game in the contest, but you won't see that many heavily processed images here. Revel in the glow of the beautiful iOS artworks and head over to the IPPA website for more info on how you can be a part of next year's competition.

Bigshot DIY camera aims to teach kids tech basics

Bigshot's creator hopes children will learn from first building his camera and then sharing photos

A DIY digital camera designed to teach children about how the tech it uses works has been launched in the US.

Owners of Bigshot's device need to assemble its parts in a specific sequence to make it work. An online guide explains the science behind them.

It has been developed by a US computer science professor who used funds from Google and the US Department of Defense to develop the kit.

He aims to offer an alternative to other programming-focused projects.

An Incredible 19th Century Lens Has Been Reengineered For DSLR

In 1840, Joseph Petzval invented an optical portrait lens, which for the rest of the century would be used to take loads of photos. Now, the retro-fanatics at Lomography have reengineered the lens from the ground up for today's Canon and Nikon cameras. And the photos are incredible.

What we're looking at is a complete reinvention of the Petzval lens to fit either Canon EF mount or Nikon F mount cameras—they'll work on both film SLR and DSLR cameras.

Lytro Light Field Camera: This Is What New Feels Like

It isn't very often we encounter technology that is really, truly new. PCs, cellphones, the Internet, multitouch. Those all changed our world when they were first introduced. Not to overstate it, but Lytro may well be the latest member of that clique. The selling point is simple: you no longer have to worry about getting a shot in focus, because any part of the photo can be brought into focus after the fact. Magic.

Its guts are built on light field capture; concepts completely removed from what we previously understood about cameras. It's clearly not evolutionary. But for all the newness and innovation it brings to consumers, does it have what it takes to be revolutionary?

Computational photography: the snap is only the start

Pelican makes a phone camera that allows two subjects to be in focus but not objects in between them

Imagine a camera that allows you to see through a crowd to get a clear view of someone who would otherwise be obscured, a smartphone that matches big-budget lenses for image quality, or a photograph that lets you change your point of view after it's taken.

The ideas may sound outlandish but they could become commonplace if "computational photography" lives up to its promise.

Unlike normal digital photography - which uses a sensor to capture a single two-dimensional image of a scene - the technique records a richer set of data to construct its pictures.

Instead of trying to mimic the way a human eye works, it opens the activity up to new software-enhanced possibilities.

Pelican Imaging is one of the firms leading the way.

Why Backing Up Your Files May Be Your Most Important Photography Habit

Humans are damn near helpless and hopeless without habits. Specific tasks, actions and responsibilities must be completed every day, and at the same time and in the same place, to lead any kind of meaningful life. As the old saying goes: Some people are so habitual that you could set your watch by their actions. Growing as a photographer, whether hobbyist, amateur or professional, and enjoying the process, is essentially impossible without a long series of photography habits: cleaning your equipment, checking your memory cards and batteries, holding your camera “correctly,” using the same exposure formula for specific shooting conditions, etc.

Many photographers, however, have still not made backing up their computer files (of all kinds) the important habit it should be. I think part of the reason is that we are all still a bit starry-eyed about computers. We create a file, give it name and save it; and it happens so quickly that it makes it easy to move to the next task and accomplish more during less time, which, after all, is one of the primary benefits of a computer. It’s time to wipe the stars from our eyes and return to Earth, however, and realize that computers are devices conceived and built by humans, which means they can fail…and they do!
Backing up files is the only means currently available to protect us from the imperfections of computers, hard drives and all other storage devices. That’s why The American Society of Media Photographers recommends the following 3-step backup plan:

http://www.photographytalk.com/photography-equipment-reviews/3301-why-backing-up-your-files-may-be-your-most-important-photography-habit

Fujifilm X-M1, a Cheaper Mirrorless Camera With Wi-Fi

A new batch of leaked photos give us a glimpse of the future: Fuji's next model of interchangeable-lens cameras, the X-M1. The new camera is rumored to be a cheaper, entry-level version of their popular X-series line, with a body-only price of around $600, according to speculation.
The M1 looks very similar to the X-E1. The biggest changes are the articulating display and lack of a viewfinder. The control scheme is pared down, as you would expect on a cheaper model, and it is said to feature WiFi connectivity.

Adobe Photoshop Creative Cloud Launched

Whether it’s delight or dismay, Adobe Photoshop Creative Cloud is now available. WPPI posted a Creative Cloud preview a while back, so today they won’t get into its benefits and drawbacks. Instead, let’s take a quick look at some of the enhancements you’ll find in Photoshop CC, which now includes features such as 3D previously only found in the Extended version of PS.

  • An improved algorithm delivers better and more flexible sharpening with Smart Sharpen
  • Intelligent upsampling for better results when increasing file sizes
  • Camera Shake Reduction uses image analysis to help sharpen blurry photos caused by camera shake
  • Liquify can be used as a smart filter
  • Adobe Camera Raw 8 offers same new features as in Lightroom: Advanced Healing Tool, Radial Gradient tool, and the Upright straightening tool
  • ACR can be used as a smart filter
  • To keep the install time more manageable, Bridge is not installed by default but can be downloaded from within PS CC
  • Improved tools (Minimum/Maximum) to tweak mask edges

  • Adobe acquired Behance in December, so sharing and uploading images to your Behance account can now be done from within Photoshop. (As a bonus, you get a free Behance pro site with your CC membership.) But perhaps the biggest feature to look forward to is the ability to sync your settings—including preferences, actions, brushes and more—across computers via the Creative Cloud. Unfortunately, it isn’t available as of now, but we’ll keep you posted.

Visit Adobe for more details about Photoshop CC and the other Creative Cloud apps. For pricing plans, go here. Be sure to check out promotional pricing ($9.99 a month for the first year!), which is available if you sign up by July 31st.
