These Doors Tell A Long Story

The San Antonio Conservation Society (SACS) was formed on March 22, 1924, and officially incorporated on July 8, 1925. It has been responsible for saving many city structures from destruction.

What is currently the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is the result of years of efforts involving SACS and other entities. Its involvement began in the 1920s, when they started working with the United States government to preserve the old missions. These original doors, salvaged from a trash heap, and bought by the San Antonio Conservation Society many years ago, were dedicated by Miss Anna Ellis to the memory of Mrs. Essie Crawford Castanola. They are now preserved at Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo, San Antonio, Texas.

The beauty of these old doors tells a story of time gone by.

San Antonio - Mission San Jose

Located along the San Antonio River in Texas, the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park encompasses four 18th-century Spanish Colonial missions and an elaborate infrastructure.

The largest and most famous of the San Antonio Missions, Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo, also known as "Queen of the Mission", was built several miles south of the earliest mission, San Antonio de Valero (the Alamo) along the west bank of the San Antonio River. It was founded in 1720 by Fray Antonio Margil de Jesus and was a major social and cultural center. It is famous for its Rose Window, which is a fine example of Spanish Colonial ornamentation. Like the other missions, the compound was designed with defensive walls.

Today, the San Antonio Missions represent the largest collection of Spanish Colonial missions in the United States. These historic sites became the foundation for the city of San Antonio.

San Antonio - Crucifix Mission San Jose

San José y San Miguel de Aguayo, in the 1700s, was a fortress that looked like a typical medieval community. Daily living and survival were centered around the expansion of the Catholic church, and they were all connected to Spanish settlers in Texas. The mission is one of four historic Spanish missions on the San Antonio southside.

Much research went into trying to make certain the overall renovation was historically accurate, especially the Mission Church. The "retablo" or backdrop for the altar, defines the church's interior, serving to frame sacred statues of St. Michael the Archangel and St. Francis in recognition of the Franciscan friars who built the mission 250 years ago. It is made of Mexican red cedar with a Latino-inspired crucifix in the center. The priceless, hand-carved statues of the Virgin Mary and St. Joseph date back to around the Spanish colonial era. The statue of St. Joseph was owned by the founding friar, Father Antonio Margil de Jesus. The Mission Church's interior walls are painted to recapture its original 18th-century colors.

Mission San Jose, the "Queen of the Missions," is not a museum, but a wonderful, historical, spiritual place that San Antonio has used for almost 300 years.

Mission San Jose - San Antonio, TX

A chain of five missions established along the San Antonio River in the 18th century became the largest concentration of Catholic missions in North America. The first and today the most widely known of these missions was San Antonio de Valero, commonly called the Alamo.

Soon after the building of the Alamo, a second mission was founded in 1720 about five miles downstream. Named San Jose y San Miguel de Aguayo, this new mission was established by Fray Antonio Margil de Jesus, who had previously left a failed mission in East Texas. A model among the Texas missions, San Jose in San Antonio gained a reputation as a major social and cultural center. It also provided the strongest garrison among the San Antonio missions against raids from Indians.

Today the religious facilities of Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo, also known as the "Queen of the Missions", are maintained by the Franciscans and is maintained by the National Park Service.
