A New Orleans Alley

New Orleans' French Quarter may be its most secretive neighborhood. Here, in an area famous for its raucous nightlife and hedonistic abandon, lives a community in love with the area's timelessness, its beautiful buildings and handcrafted details, its proximity to the river, and its quality as a great, walkable neighborhood.

If you like the pulse of great music coming to you on the coffee-scented air; if you enjoy walking down an ancient street where overhanging balconies spill pools of mysterious shadow; if stepping off a crowded sidewalk into a secret garden makes your heart skip a beat, then you "get" the French Quarter.

New Orleans- A Skull Paradise

New Orleans has a perfect spooky and haunted setting, and the Mardi Gras festivity, the last day of indulgence before Ash Wednesday, is combined with many voodoo rituals.

One of the less well-known traditions of Mardi Gras in the Big Easy are the Skull and Bone gangs who come out in the early morning. Their mission, besides the celebration of Mardi Gras, is to seek out small children and warn to live their lives rightly least the skull and bone spirits should have to come to them too soon. The tradition lives on, continuing what began around 1819, now mingling with the "younger" traditions of the Mardi Gras Indians and the Baby Dolls.

Some of NOLA's skulls are completely bizarre while others are just skulls which are for sale in one of the many quirky shops in N'awlins. Delightfully chaotic - Absurdly beautiful. That pretty much describes New Orleans.

New Orleans French Market

The French Market in New Orleans is a feast for all five senses. It is really a flea market or a permanant street fair. Fortunately the French Market is large enough to comfortably accommodate crowds, and the vendors have some great wares.

There is a little bit of everything under one roof - homemade food and drinks, arts and crafts, souvenirs, alligator sandwiches and the local Abita beer, as well as the famous French beignets at the Cafu Monde! Every type of Cajun food you could imagine, clothing, artwork, hot sauce, lovely Nola photographs, real fruit smoothies made from organic bananas for $1 or less, margaritas & daiquiris with a fruit combo for everyone! Venetian Masks, T-shirts, pictures, poems, magnets, Creole Mustard, Voodoo Dolls, Anatolian Silver, and so on.

The Big Easy's French Market has so much New Orleans character that it is a must visit. Yes, it is tourist trap but it's a fun tourist trap!
