Coast Baja California

The Baja Peninsula (Baja California Peninsula) extends from Tijuana, near the U.S. border, to Cabo San Lucas - approximately 747 miles, (1202 km).
It is bordered by the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of California, which is alternately known as the "Sea of Cortes".

The peninsula is mountainous, especially in the north and far south, and those mountains ring an inhospitable, rocky (and hot) desert landscape.
Except for the desert peninsula's tip, where Los Cabos (the Capes), Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo are booming, locals refer to Baja as 'La Frontera', the frontier, because it still remains largely undeveloped.

El Arco De Cabo San Lucas

The distinctive landmark of Cabo San Lucas is the rugged taffy-colored El Arco de Cabo San Lucas (The Arch) rock formation that erupts from the sea at the tip of the Baja Peninsula, Mexico. Viewed from a distance from nearly every vantage point in Cabo San Lucas, the image of El Arco is synonymous with Cabo San Lucas. These rock formations, also known as Land's End, were carved into fantastic shapes by the rough winds and seas of the southern Baja California peninsula.

During low tide, many visitors like to walk here along Playa del Amante (Lover's Beach) because it allows for a better view of an eroded passageway called the Arch of Poseidon. You can also observe Los Frailes, two rock islets that are frequented by sea lions. The calm waters of the Sea of Cortez makes this an easy dive even for the first time diver.

La Revolution Mexicana

Mexico has an incredibly rich culture, as diverse to each region as its tropical rainforests and as vibrant as the lively music of the mariachis. A long history of civil rebellions and revolution has produced artworks of an intensity which endures through the centuries and resonates around the world.

The Mexican Revolution began in 1910. The rebellion was launched by the famous revolutionary figures Franciso I. Madero, Francisco Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata. They wanted true democracy, ruling government to be held within bounds of law and well defined and upheld rights for Mexicans. A long struggle for control ensued, in which it is estimated that 900,000 people died.

The revolution resulted in the establishment of the Mexican Constitution of 1917. Today Mexico�s political structure is that of a federal presidential representative democratic republic.

Fly A Kite - Old Hobby Reborn

Kite flying is a fun activity which people of all ages can enjoy. All you have to do is go somewhere windy and you can fly a kite.

The physics of how a kite gains lift is very similar to how an airplane gains lift. To get a kite airborne it is sometimes necessary to run while pulling the kite behind you. This creates "apparent wind" which creates lift and pushes the kite up. Once the kite reaches a high enough altitude where the wind becomes strong enough, you can stop running and the kite will remain aloft.

The wind is up, the sun is shining and some of the most amazing kites are soaring in the sky above Los Cabos, Baja California, Mexico. In Cabos Kite games are designed to be fun, rather than strict contests with lots of rules.

VLA - Very Large Array Radio Telescopes

The most photogenic array of radio telescopes in the world, the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) of Radio Telescopes in New Mexico, USA, has also been one of the most productive.

Each of the 27 radio telescopes in Very Large Array, located on the remote Plains of San Agustin, is the size of a house and can be moved on train tracks. The VLA has been used to discover water on planet Mercury, radio-bright coronae around ordinary stars, micro-quasars in our Galaxy, gravitationally-induced Einstein rings around distant galaxies, and radio counterparts to cosmologically distant gamma-ray bursts. The vast size of the VLA has allowed astronomers to study the details of super-fast cosmic jets, and even map the center of our Galaxy.

The Very Large Array near Socorro, N.M., is one of the world's largest and most sensitive radio telescopes, an incredible place to visit for the science that is being done here, the engineering marvel that is the telescope itself, and the sheer beauty of these huge dishes in the middle of the NM plains.

Texas Longhorns a Texas Icon

Texas Longhorns are as much a symbol of Texas as the state flower, bluebonnets. The cattle's legacy is rich and deep, spanning centuries - and even continents. They got their name from their location of origin and their characteristic horns. The Texas Longhorn's long horns grow outward from the sides of the head to spans up to 7 feet.

The Texas longhorn is a rarity among cattle breeds because it developed naturally rather than as a product of human selective breeding. They reach maximum weight in less than 10 years and produce exceptionally lean meat. Longhorn beef has less cholesterol than a skinless chicken breast. Longhorns are fun and fascinating; they come in every color under the sun, every color pattern and color mix, including some rare colors like lavender and mulberry. Horns also come in a variety of colors, shapes, twists and lengths. As a general rule the longer the horns, the more valuable the cow. Only cows have twisted horns.

Few things are as symbolic of the Lone Star State as the Texas longhorn.

Old Oak Tree Mission San Jose

As we walk in through the outer walls into the very large courtyard of the Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo in San Antonio, Texas, you can easily imagine stepping back into history. The wide open spaces gave a clear idea of what it was like when these missions were first established in Texas. Mission San Jose has maintained it's openness and history well.

Mission San Jose is known as the "Queen of the Missions". Many stories took place at this Mission, as well as the other Missions in the Historical Park. The historic walls and grounds were beautifully restored to give us a view of how the missions operated - a sustainable community built around the church, with houses, water supply systems, gardens and barns. San Jose Mission in San Antonio, Texas makes it easy to understand the concept of mission communities, as these were not stand-alone missions, but walled medieval communities.

Mission San Jose is an incredible source of history for anyone interested in what the landscape here looked like before everything that followed.

Holy Spirit Cathedral San Fernando, San Antonio TX

The cornerstone of the San Fernando church building in the new village of San Antonio, Texas was laid in 1738, making it the first parish church in Texas. The church was completed in 1749 and the original walls still stand today forming what is now the sanctuary (the area around and behind the altar) of the present cathedral.

These walls are the oldest standing structure in the State of Texas. The dome of the original church was the geographic center of the city and the point from which all mileage was calculated to San Antonio. In 1868 the eastern wall, including the original tower, the front of the church, the choir loft and baptistry were torn down to make room for the French Gothic building which is now the main body of the cathedral. This work was completed in 1873. Stained glass windows were added in 1920.

Symphonies, concerts, and television specials are but a few of the special events held in the Cathedral of San Fernando regularly. Hundreds of people enter the cathedral daily to pray, visit, light a candle, or follow various devotional traditions. Each person is a part of the story of this magnificent place and a tribute to its enduring presence as the spiritual center of San Antonio.

St. Francis Of Sales And St. Monica

San Fernando de Béxar (now San Antonio) was founded in 1731 between the San Antonio River and San Pedro Creek, to the east of the presidio established at the same location in 1718.

Constructed in 1738, San Fernando de Béxar Cathedral in San Antonio is the oldest continuously working church in the State of Texas. The Cathedral building is Texas' oldest standing church building and served as the church for both the Spanish and Mexican governments prior to Texas' gaining independence. It has always been at the center of San Antonio. Some of the Heroes of the Alamo have been entombed in one of the chapels.

From its founding, this church retains the love of the San Antonians. Recently renovated, the stations of the Cross and the Altar, along with much of the art work, are extraordinary.

Sunflowers In A Basket

Sunflower is one of the few crop species that originated in North America. It was probably a "camp follower" of several of the western native American tribes who domesticated the crop and then carried it eastward and southward of North America. The first Europeans observed sunflower cultivated in many places from southern Canada to Mexico.

Sunflowers are annuals with showy, daisylike flowerheads that are usually 2-4 inches across and bright yellow (though occasionally red). Tall and course, the plants have creeping or tuberous roots and large, bristly leaves. Today, varieties have even been developed for small spaces and containers. Most sunflowers are remarkably tough and easy to grow as long as the soil is not waterlogged. Most are heat- and drought-tolerant, and many are attractive to bees and birds.

The Sunflower makes an excellent cut flower. It provides a bright splash of sunny color to a home, whether inside or out, and makes cheerful spring and summer centerpieces. Sunflowers are gestures of goodwill and friendship, making them perfect gifts for any friend or loved one having a tough day.

These Doors Tell A Long Story

The San Antonio Conservation Society (SACS) was formed on March 22, 1924, and officially incorporated on July 8, 1925. It has been responsible for saving many city structures from destruction.

What is currently the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is the result of years of efforts involving SACS and other entities. Its involvement began in the 1920s, when they started working with the United States government to preserve the old missions. These original doors, salvaged from a trash heap, and bought by the San Antonio Conservation Society many years ago, were dedicated by Miss Anna Ellis to the memory of Mrs. Essie Crawford Castanola. They are now preserved at Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo, San Antonio, Texas.

The beauty of these old doors tells a story of time gone by.

San Antonio - Mission San Jose

Located along the San Antonio River in Texas, the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park encompasses four 18th-century Spanish Colonial missions and an elaborate infrastructure.

The largest and most famous of the San Antonio Missions, Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo, also known as "Queen of the Mission", was built several miles south of the earliest mission, San Antonio de Valero (the Alamo) along the west bank of the San Antonio River. It was founded in 1720 by Fray Antonio Margil de Jesus and was a major social and cultural center. It is famous for its Rose Window, which is a fine example of Spanish Colonial ornamentation. Like the other missions, the compound was designed with defensive walls.

Today, the San Antonio Missions represent the largest collection of Spanish Colonial missions in the United States. These historic sites became the foundation for the city of San Antonio.
