San Diego De Alcala

San Diego de Alcalá, the Mother of the Alta California Missions, was founded July 16, 1769 by Blessed Junípero Serra. The mission overlooks San Diego's historic Old Town.

The mission church is 135 feet long, 35 feet wide, 29 feet high, built of adobe, and has a Tile roof. Its style is simple, setting the standard for the "mission style." The front facade is plain, decorated only with a few flat ornamental columns at the side and above the entrance. Wing-like buttresses (supports), added in 1931 to strengthen it, extend from each side of the entrance. Once an arched corridor crossed the front of the original church, but has not been rebuilt. The walls are three feet thick, roughly plastered, with small windows near the ceiling. The floor of the church is made with very old adobe bricks, the benches are solid knotty wood, everything is in earthy golden colors with crimson here and there.

Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá is a very well preserved example of colonial architecture; one that fully deserves a visit when exploring southern California.

St. Francis Chapel at Mission San Diego de Alcalá

San Diego de Alcalá, the first of the great California Missions, marks the birthplace of Christianity in the far West. It is California's first church. The mission was named for St. Didacus of Alcalá, Spain.

The architecture of the Saint Francis Chapel is interesting and the interior is beautiful, yet simple. The main church is 150' long, 35' wide and 29' high. Its long and narrow layout is a consequence of the trees available to use for its beams (the doorway beams are original, dating back to the 1813 reconstruction). The original windows were built high to retard attack, covered with treated rawhides instead of glass.

This remarkable and significant historical shrine provides an understanding and appreciation of the beginning of Christianity in this corner of the world, so remote from the Mother Country of Spain and yet so similar.

Stained Glass Window Immaculate Conception Church San Diego, CA

Welcome to The Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception - the mother of all the missions in California. On July 16, 1769, Father Jun�ro Serra planted the cross on the hill above San Diego Old Town. In 1868 the cornerstone for the present church was laid, and in 1917 the church was opened for solemn worship.

Throughout the church are icons, stained glass windows into heaven where we look toward God and the heavenly beings, and they look upon us. The first window on the north side of the building near the altar is of Mary, the Immaculate Conception praying to God for us.

You may light a candle that serves as a symbol that your prayer continues before God even when you leave this church.

Lovers Beach Cabo

Millennia ago, Cabo San Lucas was part of the Mexican mainland. Then a massive rupture of the San Andreas Fault sent the waters of the Pacific crashing into the newly formed depression, creating the Sea of Cortez and the Baja Peninsula. Lying at the very tip of Baja, where the Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez, is Cabo San Lucas - or "Cabo".
If you take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas harbor to Land's End, you will see an array of towering rock formations. There are several formations worth seeing between 'The Arch' and 'Playa del Amor', a popular honeymoon destination, including two huge rock islets. Other rock formations near Land's End in Cabo include 'Roca Pelicanos' (Pelican Rock), a smaller rocky outcrop located off the northeast side of the cape.
The series of rugged rocks in the Pacific, which reaches Alaska's Aleutian Islands, is known by the locals as the Finisterra. They were used as a hiding place by pirates, who would ambush and plunder merchant ships heading toward the west coast.

Coast Baja California

The Baja Peninsula (Baja California Peninsula) extends from Tijuana, near the U.S. border, to Cabo San Lucas - approximately 747 miles, (1202 km).
It is bordered by the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of California, which is alternately known as the "Sea of Cortes".

The peninsula is mountainous, especially in the north and far south, and those mountains ring an inhospitable, rocky (and hot) desert landscape.
Except for the desert peninsula's tip, where Los Cabos (the Capes), Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo are booming, locals refer to Baja as 'La Frontera', the frontier, because it still remains largely undeveloped.

El Arco De Cabo San Lucas

The distinctive landmark of Cabo San Lucas is the rugged taffy-colored El Arco de Cabo San Lucas (The Arch) rock formation that erupts from the sea at the tip of the Baja Peninsula, Mexico. Viewed from a distance from nearly every vantage point in Cabo San Lucas, the image of El Arco is synonymous with Cabo San Lucas. These rock formations, also known as Land's End, were carved into fantastic shapes by the rough winds and seas of the southern Baja California peninsula.

During low tide, many visitors like to walk here along Playa del Amante (Lover's Beach) because it allows for a better view of an eroded passageway called the Arch of Poseidon. You can also observe Los Frailes, two rock islets that are frequented by sea lions. The calm waters of the Sea of Cortez makes this an easy dive even for the first time diver.
